What Is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), otherwise known as photo rejuvenation, is a procedure we use at Ageless Medical Spa to help our patients correct a variety of skin conditions, such as rosacea, hyperpigmentation, and skin imperfections caused by sun damage.

How Does IPL Photo Rejuvenation Work?

IPL is a quick procedure that uses intense light pulses that penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. These lasers work by constricting blood vessels and collagen found below the epidermis, reducing skin redness, and improving the appearance of certain signs of aging. The light beams target either the melanin or the hemoglobin. Once the pulses of light break down vessels and pigments into fragments, they become less visible on the skin surface.

Is There Any Pain During My IPL Photo Rejuvenation Session?

Some patients may feel some mild discomfort, especially during the first session. As your skin imperfections begin to disappear, subsequent treatments are more comfortable. Each session usually takes about 30 to 90 minutes, depending upon the skin condition and the size of the treatment site.

What Happens During An IPL Photofacial Treatment?

On the day of your appointment, you will be taken into a laser room and given eyepads or special glasses to protect your eyes. A cooling gel will then be applied on the treatment site. Once your skin is prepared, a handpiece is gently applied to the skin while pulses of light are emitted through its smooth glass surface. Most of our patients report the sensation as being snapped lightly by a small rubber band.

Once the treatment is finished, the area is cleansed and moisturized. Some mild swelling may occur; this can be alleviated by applying a cold pack on the area. Reapplying a concealer or foundation may be allowed once the IPL session is over.

What Should I Expect After My IPL Photo Rejuvenation Appointment?

After the procedure, the treated area may look red for two to five days. In rare cases, bruising can occur and will last about a week. With age spots and freckles, the treated spots will appear darker for three to seven days and will crust over for ten days. In a month, the lesions will gradually start to clear and resolve by themselves. It usually takes three to five IPL sessions to entirely clear age spots.
