How to Cope with Aging Skin

Skin AgingJust like everything else, our skin changes as we age. We need to learn how to treat our bodies, and our skin, for optimal health. Here are some things to know about taking care of our skin.
What Causes Skin to Age?
Several factors from our environment and lifestyle can contribute to the overall health of our skin. Knowing how these factors impact our skin can help us properly take care of ourselves.
Harmful chemicals and infectious diseases can prematurely age our skin. Those who work in or near factories, cities, construction sites, or other sources of pollution can wreak havoc on our skin.
Poor habits, such as smoking, can have adverse effects on our skin. Even secondhand smoke can effect our skin’s quality.
Although a bronze tan may be what’s in style, too much direct sunlight can lead to damaged skin, wrinkles, and skin cancer later in life.
What Are the Signs of Aging Skin?
The following are all common signs of aging skin:

  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Sagging skin
  • Age spots
  • Dry and dull skin

These symptoms can be alleviated by avoiding self-destructive, unhealthy behaviors such as smoking. Proper skin care can reverse some of these symptoms. Be aware that some of these symptoms are just signs of naturally aging skin, and doesn’t mean your skin is unhealthy.
Can You Prevent Aging Skin?
While you can not prevent your skin from naturally aging, you can certainly slow the process and improve the look of your skin. For example, you can apply skin rejuvenating treatments to help counteract harmful chemicals and pollution. It is a good idea to receive an anti-aging facial at least three times per year. Avoid direct sunlight and wear sunscreen between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. Staying conscious of your skin’s health and having a healthy lifestyle can counter the effects of aging.
